2023: Media must brace up for challenges ahead – NUJ president

The national president of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ),Chris Isiguzo, has said media professionals should brace up for the challenges ahead, since they are to participate in the process of social reconstruction and democratisation.

Isiguzo stated this Tuesday during a two- day capacity building Workshop for Journalists and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)in North east on Conflict- Sensitisation reporting, 2023 general elections. 

The training was organised by Centre For Democracy and Development (CDD) in collaboration with INEC and NUJ and it was held at Custodian Hotel Conference Hall,  Gombe, Gombe state.

Presenting a paper titled :”Role of the media in the conduct of peaceful elections,” Isiguzo stated that the topic is apt, bearing in mind the critical role of the media in the delivery of credible and peaceful elections.

He noted that it is imperative for media professionals to brainstorm ahead of the election year and prepare  well for the task ahead.

“As journalists, we are expecting to develop a thorough understanding of the elections and the electoral process, an understanding of conflicts and convey these to citizens in a way that reflects the truth in all their complexities.

“The media have a vital role to play in nation building, by being active partners in the implementation of the development processes.

“The media plays a major role in keeping the citizenry abreast of current events and raising awareness of various issues in any society,  ” he said
