Amidst the internal wrangling within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former ministers who served from 1999 to 2015 are set to hold a meeting to chart a way forward for the party. Th e meeting, sources said, will deliberate on the legal logjam the party is enmeshed in, as well as issues bordering on its likely choice as presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections. Former Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa state and some party stalwarts are being touted as possible fl ag-bearers of the party in the election.

“Ex-PDP ministers from 1999 will meet tomorrow to chart a way forward for the party. Th e tendency for the forum to deliberate on 2019 elections and the possibility of working out mechanism towards fi ling or supporting a candidate for the forthcoming presidential election, will top the agenda. Prof. Jerry Gana and other ex-ministers are expected at the meeting.” On the legal huddles confronting the party, he said: “We are not unaware of the legal issue, but that would not stop us from charting a way forward, irrespective of the outcome at the Supreme Court. “Like other stakeholders, the forum believes it has a greater role to play in this regard, considering the failing leadership of the APC – led government.”

Continuing, it said: “Th e Forum cannot aff ord to see the PDP family in disarray in the name of legal tussle. We can’t aff ord not to turn things around in view of the current national realities. Th is is really the time to restrategise and bounce back to reckoning. Th e party can’t aff ord to fail Nigerians in their hour of needs.” Both the Ahmad Makarfi -led National Caretaker Committee and the legally recognised National Chairman of the party are embroiled in a face-off which observers say is weighing down on the party’s progress.
