1 killed, houses torched as crisis erupts in Makurdi

At least one person was Thursday morning killed and some houses torched when Hoodlums clashed in north bank area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

The houses affected are said to be those of one Joseph Ancha, Michael Loko and Emmanuel Jime, the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Shippers Council.

Eyewitness account revealed that the crisis erupted when a young man, who was stabbed for rapping a girl onWednesday died on Thursday morning while receiving treatment at a hospital in Makurdi.

However, the Benue State Police Command spokesperson SP Catherine Sewuese Anene, said “On 8/2/2023 at about 1900hrs information was gathered that one Abdullahi Suleiman got into a fight with some unknown persons at North Bank and he was stabbed with a knife on his stomach. Suleiman died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

“However, on 9/2/2023 after his burial, miscreants in the area planned and set a house ablaze with intention to incite crises but timely intervention of the police brought the situation under control.

“The Commissioner of Police Benue state Command, CP. Wale Abass who visited the area engaged stakeholders and advised them to continue to live in peace and harmony as it has been.

“He urged them to fish out hoodlums amongst them that are trying to create tension.

“In response, members of the community assure the CP of their continuous efforts to maintain peace, reiterating that they have no religious or ethnic dichotomy in the area.”
