Yobe: UNHCR seeks support to address plights of IDPs


United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR has sought for individuals’ support in meeting the plights of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who were forced to flee their homes as result of crisis.

The head of the field unit in Yobe state, Gabriel Idoko disclosed this Thursday at the commemoration of ‘World Refugees Day’ in Damaturu.

‘UNHCR is asking people from all walks of life to join the global challenge in solidarity with refugees who each year trek 1 billion
miles to reach the nearest point of safety”.

“Today in Yobe, our children from displaced schools impacted by the insurgency, have courageously demonstrated their solidarity with the symbolic walk recreating their plight to safety”, he said.

The 2019 World Refugees’ Day focuses on promoting the African Union’s 2019 theme to put spotlight on resolving forced displacement and focus
on the AU’s year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displace Persons towards a durable solutions to displacement in Africa.

As part of its activities, the UNHCR paid a visit to displayed persons in Kasaisa community in Yobe state assuring that the agency would support them to regain their reliance in dignity.
The agency alongside students of the secondary schools were at Yobe state House of Assembly for awareness walk where the speaker represented by Hon. Buba Kallalawa assured to make laws that will address the plight of IDPs in the state.
