Yobe: Buni moves to curtail outbreak of meningitis 

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe state Tuesday visited the affected areas hit by the cerebrospinal meningitis.

The areas affected include Fika GSS, GSTC, GGSTC, all in Potiskum and GGSTC Gadaka and Specialist Hospital Potiskum.

The governor was represented by his deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, who noted that the recent outbreak of the cerebrospinal meningitis in some communities in zone B required urgent attention.

He said as part of effort geared towards containing and effectively tackling the outbreak, government has already provided the emergency treatment vaccines as well as deployment of rapid response team to all affected areas.

He called on heath officials in the state to prevent the outbreak from spreading to other schools and communities and to report any abnormality to the nearest heath facility.

He commended the rapid response of the Ministry of Health, Education and the effort of the council chairmen in the affected areas. He also acknowledged the assistance of the World Health Organisation (WHO) to contain the outbreak.

Briefing the governor at the General Hospital, Potiskum, the Deputy Chief Medical Director, Dr Abubakar Sadiq Zakari, said the meningitis is an acute inflammation of the membrane covering the brain and the spinal cord and  it is a very serious infection.

He called for the construction of more rooms in the isolated camps so as to accommodate the victims of the outbreak.

The permanent secretary, Ministry of Health, Isa Bukar, informed the deputy governor that 214 cases was recorded with 7 mortality and 3 in ICU are responding to treatment.
