We’re prepared for 2019 polls – INEC boss

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians of its preparedness for the 2019 general elections.
Speaking in Abuja, yesterday, the Commission’s national chairman, Prof.
Mahmood Yakubu, said it was fully prepared to conduct the 2019 general elections, disclosing that INEC under his leadership is a reflection of the will of Nigerians.
The INEC boss, who spoke during the unveiling of a document on elections titled: “INEC Beyond 2015; Overview, Challenges Aand Prospect,” written by the Independent Service Delivery Monitoring Group (ISDMG), a coalition of civil society organisations, further gave the assurance that “2019 general elections will be better than that of 2015.
” “We have moved from uncertainty to certainty in elections time table.
For the first time in history of general elections, the Ondo state governorship election was not challenged in the court of law,” he said.
He, however, solicited the cooperation of Nigerians to achieve the plan of the organisation to conduct credible elections.
Yakubu disclosed that seven million eligible voters were registered by the Commission in the last continuous voter registration, adding that the registered voters would be displayed on INEC’s website soon.
According to him, the Commission has conducted 179 elections so far, and that litigations after elections have reduced.
Meanwhile, stakeholders on elections management have commended INEC for its success on the recently concluded continuous voter registration.
They, however, urged the Commission to fast-track the process of collecting the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) across the country.
In his opening remarks, the executive director of ISDMG, Dr.
Chima Amadi, noted that “elections are getting better under the leadership of Prof.
Mahmoud Yakubu as national chairman of INEC.
” According to him, INEC has been the most responsive of all government agencies involved in the election value-chain.
We have no iota of doubt in our minds that this INEC is set to break bounds as evidence available to us suggests.
