The federal government has raised concerns over a new United States policy limiting non-immigrant visas for Nigerians to three months with a single entry, describing the slash as troubling, as it undermines the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation that defines relationship between both countries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press statement by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, stressed that the policy has placed an unfair burden on Nigerians, from students chasing academic dreams to professionals, families, and cultural ambassadors engaged in legitimate travel.

“This new restriction doesn’t just limit travel; it disrupts lives and opportunities,” the Ministry stated. “It runs contrary to the principles of reciprocity and equity expected between friendly nations,” the statement r4ad in part.

While acknowledging the US government’s sovereign right to shape its immigration policies, the federal government called for a review of the new policy in the interest of long-standing bilateral ties and shared global responsibilities.

Blueprint reports that diplomatic talks were ongoing, even as the ministry affirmed its commitment to securing a fair and balanced resolution that serves the interests of both nations.

The US Department of State, Tuesday, announced updates to its reciprocal non-immigrant visa policy, impacting several countries including Nigeria.

A press statement by the US Mission disclosed that: “Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period. Those U.S. non-immigrant visas issued prior to July 8, 2025, will retain their status and validity.”

The Mission noted that visa reciprocity was a continuous process and was subject to review and change, even as it claimed the US Mission was working with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria can meet the criteria.
