Senate crisis: 49 Senators write Saraki, reject impeachment bid

Forty nine Senators who signed an anti-impeachment move against Senate President Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu have on Tuesday last week formally written the presiding officers, insisting on their rejection of any illegal move to impeach them.
This is coming ahead of possible reconvening of the two chambers of the National Assembly tomorrow or Wednesday for consideration of the N242 billion proposed by the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) for conduct of the 2019 general elections.
It was learnt that the senators submitted the document to the Senate President yesterday evening after appending their signatures.
On Tuesday August 7, a document containing the names of the 49 lawmakers surfaced in the heat of the blockade of the National Assembly complex by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Though signatures were not attached to the Wednesday’s statement, sources close to Saraki confirmed on yesterday that a properly signed document has now been handed over to the Senate President.
The document titled: Senators against any purported impeachment of Senator Bukola Saraki and Senator Ike Ekweremadu, stated: We the undersigned senators hereby declare our total support for Senator Bukola Saraki and Senator Ike Ekweremadu as the President and Deputy Senate President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
‘We are against any purported illegal impeachment being cooked up by a few minorities within the ranks of the APC Senators “.
The Senators who appended their signatures included the Senator from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ekiti, Kogi, Taraba, Kwara, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue,Yobe, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, Sokoto, Avia, Edo, Rivers, Osun,Bayelsa,Cross Rivers, Delta, Enugu, Adamawa, Ogun, Oyo ,Ebonyi, Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states.
Senators also confirmed that a good number of those who did not append their signatures are either abroad or just taking their time adding that out of the 30 Senators being paraded as loyalists of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Saraki’s allies are still counted
