A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Mujahid Zaitawa, has described the rumpus in the Senate over the alleged failure of Senator Bukola Saraki to declare his assets before the Code of Conduct Tribunal as “a ploy orchestrated by some selfish individuals to truncate the nascent democratic system at the expense of North’s chance to govern the nation.”
Speaking to newsmen in Kano yesterday, Zaitawa wondered why the issue was being blown out of proportion by those who were becoming desperate to acquire undue influence by perpetuating the deadlock.
He added that the people perfecting the ploy were only seeking to pave the way for the deputy Senate President to take over.
He said it would be highly inimical to the north once such a game plan is allowed to hold water, stressing that with the removal of Saraki from the saddle of authority the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would ultimately be in firm control of the National Assembly to the detriment of the APC.
Zaitawa, the chairman of APC Northern Youth Merger Group, stressed the need for Nigerians to give President Muhammadu Buhari the chance to rule the country for two terms to enable him clear the rot brought about by the inept and incompetent leadership of the PDP.
He said: “There are incontrovertible facts on grounds that many notable figures that had served during the immediate past administration have looted the treasury with impunity and are yet to be prosecuted; they ought to be brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others.
“But once we allowed the issue of Saraki to blossom we would end up making a mockery of the entire democratic system the system would only be truncated at the expense of those who have had high regard for the system. one would also be convinced that the ploy was being perfected to pave the way for the PDP to take total control of the Senate.”
He called on the political elite to learn from the good example of the civilised democracies where hot debates were only employed as conflicts resolutions mechanisms not a ploy to truncate the system.
