Residents count losses as flood submerge Akwa Ibom community

Tears are still running as property including residential houses and farm crops estimated at several millions of naira have been destroyed by flood in Odoro Atasung village in Nsit-Ubium local government area of Akwa Ibom state.
The flood was said to have occurred in the early hours of Saturday after a heavy downpour in the community.

It was gathered that the flood swallowed a mud house, took over the entire streets and destroyed farm crops such as maizes, cassava plants and many other farms products.
A resident of the community, Mr. Tommy Jackson, told Blueprint in Uyo on Wednesday that the entire community has been in destress since the disaster.

He called on the state government to intervene and rescue the community from the menace of flooding which he said has become a perennial problem in the community.
He said the communty disturbed by the yearly flooding has decided to initiate community efforts by digging a three kilometers gutter to channel the water to the Okpoyo River
“The youths and the entire members of Odoro Atasung community in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area are distressed with the on going flood. The heavy down pour in the early morning on Saturday June 12, 2021 swallowed another mud house in the Community and destroyed other houses and farms crops.
“The youths having waited in vain  for a long period of time for the state government to come to their aid decided kickstart a community operation tagged “Operation Flood Must Go in Our Community.

“The operation is to dig a 3 kilometers gutter to channel the flood in the Community to the Okpoyo River. The 3 kilometers drainage embarked by the youths and the Community members is because flood has become a great menace to the Community, life has become a nightmare, life has never remain the same again,” he said.
Another community member, Mr Emmanuel Ntuk, blamed the yearly flooding on the grading of the community road in 2015.
According to him the construction firm failed to dig appropriate channels, adding that when it rains no matter how little, the entire community is flooded.
