Reopen popular Abuja shopping mall, Reps tell army

The House of Representatives Thursday urged the Nigerian Army to reopen the popular Banex Plaza located in Wuse 2 area of Abuja for immediate resumption of business.

The House has also mandated its Committee on National Security and Intelligence,  Defence and Police Affairs to investigate the circumstances leading to the closure, the involvement of military personnel and also advised the army to be less disruptive in handling certain situations.

There was reported disruption of activities at the plaza on May 18, 2024, when some hoodlums attacked men of the Nigerian Army.

Presenting a motion on the development and calling for reopening of the plaza Thursday, Hon Sesi Whingan recalled that the attacked soldiers were reportedly not armed and they posed no threat, thus making the attack unjustifiable.

The lawmaker noted with concern that the continued closure of the plaza, a major commercial hub was affecting businesses and the economy.
