Religious crisis taking toll on Mangu

For the first time, Mangu local government area, Plateau state, is in a religious crisis. Before the crisis, the community was the most peaceful across the entire state. Unfortunately, the narrative has now changed to the contrary.

On Monday at 7:40-8:00 am, news of the crisis broke through a phone call with an elder sister who was in the community. I intended to pay a visit to some of our online news outlets in order to get more information about the crisis. So, it was a relief when TVC News and Sahara Reporters gave updates on the crisis.

“Plateau state officials have implemented a 24-hour curfew in Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) Jan. 23, citing a deterioration of security conditions in the region. Further details, including potential casualty figures, are unclear. Movement restrictions are in effect, except for security forces and personnel conducting essential duties. Officials may extend, remove, or amend the curfew without notice.

“Authorities will likely maintain an increased security presence to ensure adherence to the curfew; associated localized transport and commercial disruptions are likely. Locals opposed to the measure may stage protests. Episodes of violence cannot be ruled out”, the news read.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.

He said the decision followed the deteriorating security situation in the area.

He expressed his sympathy to the families of the victims and the injured and assured them that the government would not relent in ensuring lasting peace in the state.

I pray that God restores peace to the community, the state and the country at large.
