Plateau assembly probes missing N70bn SURE-P fund

Plateau state House of Assembly has directed its committee on Public Account to commence investigation into the allegation of gross misconduct pending before it against Governor Jonah David Jang.
They agreed at the plenary, on Tuesday, that the petition which was brought before it by the Plateau Patriotic Front (PPF) over the alleged embezzlement of N70 billion SURE-P funds that accrued to the state and its 17 local government councils amongst other allegation of financial mismanagement.

Speaker of the House, Hon. Titus Alams, in his comments, said: “No one in the house is saying the matter will not be look into, but what we are saying is that let the appropriate thing be done.
“The petition was circulated it was on the internet everybody have read it.”
Soon after the speaker’s comments, the Minority leader, Hon. Wakdung Abbas, said the petitioners had alleged that 129 Hilux vehicles were purchased at inflated costs; that the governor illegally and forcefully deducted monies from the 17 LGs in the guise of constructing 5kl roads and that the chairmen were forced to write cheques of N400 million for the award of same contracts.
Continuing, he said the petitioners also alleged collection of illegal loans from banks, purchase of governor’s convoy vehicles, amongst others.
Speaker Alams while assigning the Public Account Committee, he co-opted chairmen of the Housing/Urban Development and Finance committees of the House to join in the investigation.
