Osun police arraign 77-yr-old ex-convict for possessing Indian hemp

Osun state police command Wednesday arraigned a 77-year-old man, Adebayo Kareem before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo,  the Osun state capital for illegal possession of Indian hemp.

The police prosecutor, Mrs Idowu Rachael, told the court that the accused was caught with a bag of dry leave later discovered to be cannabis sativa.

He alleged that the offence was contrary to and punishable under section 249 (D) and 430 of the Criminal Code Cap 38C, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

The prosecutor told the court that the accused has been arrested by the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officials for the same offence.

The prosecution said the accused is an ex-convict who has been into the business of cannabis.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty of the two count charges of unlawful possession of hemp and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

Magistrate Risikat Olayemi ordered the police to grant the accused bail and transferred the case to a Chief Magistrate Court, the jurisdiction where the offence was purportedly committed. She, thereafter, adjourned the matter to November 14 for mention.
