NYSC: FCTA warns against fake foreign degree

The Permanent Secretary Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCT), Mr. Christian Ohaa has called on Nigerians to be wary of foreign and home mushroom institutions that award fake degrees to them.

He made this call while speaking in Abuja at the meeting organized by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for corps producing institutions and other stakeholders to sensitize them on the rules and procedure of enlistment and mobilisation into the scheme.

He said: “May I also advise Nigerian youths, parents and guardians to always carry out background checks on educational institutions both at home and abroad in order to avoid falling prey to operators of fake institutions or getting admitted to non-accredited courses.

“While institutions in Nigeria are constantly subjected to the regulatory control of relevant agencies of government, especially on quality assurance, it is important that we equally forge mutually beneficial relationship with foreign institutions being patronised by our compatriots.”

Stressing the significance of education to the country, Ohaa stated: “Educational institutions is critical to the provision of qualified manpower for various sectors of our economy. However, such roles can only product meaningful results when all players act in tandem with established rules.

Urging the stakeholders to safeguard the credibility of the mobilisation process, familiarise themselves with requirements for mobilisation for National Service before graduation, the Permanent Secretary tasked them to “ensure that products of such institutions meet the basic requirements that will enable them function affectively in various sectors.”

Speaking earlier, Director General, NYSC, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, disclosed that the one-day interactive meeting with the registrars of foreign corps producing institutions in some African countries was intended to bridge the gap between his organisation and these institutions, with a view to removing all impediments in the process.

Gen. Ibrahim charged all the participants to seriously scrutinise all the issues involved in the mobilisation of students across the African continent for the NYSC scheme.
