British police have launched a homicide investigation following the tragic death of 60-year-old Nigerian woman, Nkiru Chima, who was discovered with multiple stab wounds in her apartment in Romford, East London.
The UK Metropolitan Police, in a statement released on Tuesday, said the incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, July 27. Officers were alerted by the British Transport Police at about 7:00 p.m. after concerns were raised over Chima’s welfare at her residence on Bushy Close, Romford (postcode RM1).
Upon arrival, officers found Chima unresponsive with multiple stab injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers located a woman at the address with multiple stab wounds; she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene,” the police said. “She has since been formally identified as 60-year-old Nkiru Chima from Romford.”
Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command revealed that Chima’s death is believed to be linked to another fatal incident that took place the same day, in which a 20-year-old man was found dead on train tracks at Romford station.
“Our investigation so far strongly suggests a link between the two deaths,” said Yorke. “The young man, who died on the tracks, was known to Nkiru. The British Transport Police continue to lead inquiries into his death.”
While the identity of the man has not been disclosed and no motive has yet been confirmed, police have not ruled out domestic or personal connections between the two deaths.
The Metropolitan Police thanked members of the Romford community for their cooperation and urged anyone with relevant information to assist the ongoing investigation.
“Our thoughts remain with Nkiru’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Yorke added. “We are determined to uncover the full circumstances of this tragedy and urge anyone who might know something to contact us.”
