Nigeria to feature in 24 sports at Africa Youth Games

The Director of Grassroots Sports Development, Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, Dr Ademola Are has assured Nigerians that the Team Nigeria to the 2018 African Youth Games in Algiers, Algeria will be targeting top position.
Fielding questions from sports writers at the weekend after the finals of the Nigeria Volleyball League Savannah Conference in Kaduna, Are said Nigeria will feature in 24 sports at the Games, which runs between July 16 and 28, 2018, adding that despite placing third at the last edition, the team will certainly do better in Algiers.
“We have youth athletes camped in five statea: Kaduna, Plateau, Lagos, Abuja and Bayelsa for the African Youth Games in Algiers, Algeria between July 16 and 28. We did trials today (Saturday), some of the athletes are going home, some others are coming in.
“We did well in the last Games where we came third, we are going to participate in 24 sports at the Games and we are sure Nigeria will do better at the 2018 African Youth Games.”
Speaking on the volleyball league, Are hailed the Nigerian Volleyball Federation for reviving the sports, while urging for support from all and sundry to enable the federation take the game higher and further. “The Nigeria Volleyball League is a welcomed development, Nigerians should be proud that we can put together a formidable volleyball team. Other federations should emulate NVBF.”
President Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Engr. Musa Nimrod promised that the federation will ensure that the League is an annual event, just as he urged companies and corporate organisations to support them by sponsoring the League and other competitions.
According to Nimrod, the four qualifiers in the male and female categories will join other qualifiers from the Atlantic Conference for the Top 8 Premier League scheduled for Abuja in October.
