Mining, tourism, agriculture take lead as Osun holds economic summit

Osun state governor, Gboyega Oyetola, has said that the planning Investment and Economic summit in the sate would focus more on mining, tourism and agriculture. 


Speaking at a press conference addressed by the committee, the Chief of Staff to the governor, Charles Akinola, who is the Chairman of the committee, said summit is aimed at attracting investors to many critical sectors of the state’s economy. 


He disclosed that the governor has given a marching order to the Osun Economic and Investment Summit Committee to tidy up all loose ends ahead of the event scheduled to hold between 19 and 21st November. 


According to the committee, the summit would assist at repositioning the state from being a civil service state to economy hub in the country.  

He said the main focus of the economy would be in agriculture, culture, tourism and mining, hinting that the summit would also provide an opportunity to bring the state government, potential local and international investors together to exploit the opportunity of collaboration and partnership.


He said that the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, Mr Usman Mohammed, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), among other professionals are expected at the summit. 


He disclosed further that the state would use the forum to showcase array of investment opportunities around the state and thereby attract investors to many critical sectors of the state’s economy. 


According to him, the driving force for present economic engagement in Osun was borne out of a strong political will on the part of the government to fulfil it’s campaign promises without delay. 


He added that  the product of the summit would be maximally utilised to generate  a formidable road map for laudable economic planning of significant output. 


“We are changing the economic paradigm of Osun through a result-oriented economic and investment summit that will bring about a direction for economic planning. 


“Presently, Osun has been in the global consciousness base on robust mechanisms put in place to revolutionise the mining sector for better output. 


The Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs Funke Egbemode, called for cooperation from the media by giving necessary publicity to present efforts towards economic revolution in the state. 

She boasted that the state, asides having comparative advantage in some critical sectors earlier mentioned also has inherent opportunity of stable electricity. 


Egbemode , in her  words described the relatively stable electricity supply in Osun as a spectacular advantage of great interest to every investors. 


Speaking, Prof. Olalekan Yinusa, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, said the summit would expose the economy and investment opportunities in the state in line with 10 Year’s economy plan of the state government. 


According to Yinusa, who is also the Summit Planning Co-Chairman, since 2019 is the first year for implementation of economy plan, the summit would also dwell on infrastructure, human capital and sustainable development. 


He said the summit would also serve as an intellectual economic forum for cross vitalisation of ideas, opinions and views that would help to chart a new course and a workable economic roadmap for the state.
