The Senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, Sunday Marshall Katung, has advocated the establishment of a Tertiary Research Trust Fund to give grants to researchers with interest in environmental degradation and climate change.
He stated this Tuesday in Bayelsa state, during a keynote address at the Douye Diri Peace Price and Leadership Lecture/Book Presentation as part of activities lined up to win down the first tenure and swearing- in ceremony of the governor of Bayelsa state for a second term in office.
Katung lamented that the issue of climate change is posing serious challenge globally and as such, the people should be deliberate in their activities to reduce the effects in the society.
The lawmaker added that the grant should be open to scholars across the globe as long as the Niger Delta forms part of their areas of coverage for the research because they are badly affected as a result of the activities of oil companies.
While commending the Ijaw nation for actively participating during COP28 in Dubai, Senator Katung advised governors in the Niger Delta to join hands together to organise conferences with the aim of presenting and highlighting issues affecting the region and its people.
He commended the Bayelsa state governor for always providing leadership for Bayelsans and expressed confidence in his capabilities to march the Ijaw people towards global representation.
