It’s unconstitutional to parade criminal suspects, ex- DIG tells Police

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (Rtd), DIG Salihu Hashimu Argungu, has advised the police and other security agencies in the country to stop parading suspects before prosecuting them.

He stated that: “Parading criminal suspects by the police and other security agencies is deceiving the general public, because it is not in the police law, it is unconstitutional.”

He stated this at the “Community Policing Sensitization Awareness Campaign” held Tuesday in Dutse, Jigawa state capital.

He said: “What the Police need to do is to arrest the suspects, detain them, investigate and take them to court for prosecution. That is the practice all over the world. Take their photographs and keep it till after investigation”

Also speaking, Jigawa state governor, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, said tradition rulers and community leaders always give useful advice and guided the policy makers against insecurity in the state.

“I also call on the citizens of our dear state, to always give sensitive information to the appropriate authorities and report strange and suspicious movements to the security agencies”, he stated.

While the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Usman Sule Gomna, said the community policing can increase efficiency, reduce crimes and promote trust between the police and the communities among others.
