The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) has charged both the federal and state governments to ensure speedy release of arrears of COVID-19 special inducement and hazard allowance for its members.
MHWUN National President Biobelemonye Joy Josiah and chairman of the FCT of the union, Comrade Shanabo Abubakar, made the call in Abuja during the 9th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the FCT chapter.
In his address, the national president said healthcare workers at the forefront of the fight against the coronavirus deserved to be adequately motivated.
He said: “This is not the time to spare any action in motivating those at the forefront of this battle. I wish therefore to re-echo our call for the implementation of the upward review of the CONHESS salary for our members as done for CONMESS as well as the defective payment of the COVID-19 special inducement and Hazard allowance and payment of all its arrears.”
In his address, the FCT chairman of the union, Comrade Shanabo said many health workers lost their lives in the battle against COVID-19.
“We know that no amount can replace any life, it beckons on our employer to pay whatever allowance due to health workers to motivate them in this time that they are at risk of infections of varying degrees from emerging and invading diseases.” Shanabo said.
Meanwhile, the FCT chapter of the union has elected a new team of executive members to champion the affairs of the union in the next four years.
The elected officials are Shanabo Abubakar as chairman, Modi Jibrin as vice-chairman, Shuiabu Ochenoye and Oba Ahmed were elected trustees while Ado Mohammed and Kaura Sauki were elected auditor and PRO respectively.
