Group tasks govts on skill acquisition training for almajiris

Worried by endemic child begging associated with almajiri education in northern Nigeria, a social group; Mu kawar da bara Movement, has appealed to state governments in the region to train almajiris on skills acquisition.

The measure is to transform the children to be self reliant and end child begging.

Kano state coordinator of the movement, Aliyu Assufy Algambiyawy, made the call Monday during a sensitisation meeting with stakeholders on the menace held in the state.

He said the movement was established on March 16, 2019 in Kaduna with the objective of persuading governments and stakeholders see the need to implement the programmes that would end street begging.

He added that their mission was to change the mindset of the society by promoting learning, hard work and self reliance thereby reducing street begging.

Algambiyawy therefore advised governments in the north to initiate welfare programs for people with disabilities, vulnerable members of the society and enforce ban on street begging.

“The purpose of the event is to rub minds with stakeholders on how to bring lasting solution to the menace of street begging in the society. This should be collective efforts by government, wealthy people and all stake holders,” he said.
