Gongon ambush: More soldiers found alive

The Nigerian Army has said that troops on rescue operation have found five more soldiers and officers declared missing in action during last Wednesday’s ambush on troops at Gongon village, by Boko Haram insurgents.
Army spokesman, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement that the commanding officer of the unit was among those found by the search party.
He said the soldiers and officers were found early Saturday morning and taken to the nearest Army medical facility for care.

Army spokesman said concerted efforts, which include use of air assets, Special Forces and patrols, were initiated to search for and rescue the missing soldiers.
It would be recalled that that 19 personnel comprising 16 soldiers and three officers were declared missing in action by army authorities after an ambush on troops at Guro Gongon village in Borno state. However, six of the missing soldiers were reported to have returned to the troops’ defensive position last Wednesday.
The troops, who were on clearance patrol at Guro Gongon village and environs, had earlier destroyed insurgents’ camps and killed scores of them, before the ambush.
