The German governmental says it has committed the sum of 18 million euro to the African Union Border Programme.
According to the acting Director-General of the National Boundary Commission of Nigeria, Surveyor Adamu Adaji, the African Union Border Programme was developed to use borders as instruments of promoting peace, security and stability across African nations.
In his welcome address at a workshop on regional review and planning of the AU Border Programme in West Africa on Tuesday in Abuja, the National Boundary Commission of Nigeria boss, said the funds donated by the German government would cater for the next phase of the programme, which Nigeria joined only two years ago.
He lauded the German government for the supports and formulation as well as implementation of the AU Border Programme, adding that the essence of the workshop was to take stock of past activities and achievements of the border programme.
He urged the German government to give further support to the National Boundary Commission of Nigeria in the areas of “acquisition of geo spatial data, vehicular and camping logistics, capacity development and archival searches.”
In a goodwill message, the ECOWAS Cluster Coordinator, Head of Programme on Organisational Development, Mr. Ludwig Kirchner, recalled the German government’s long standing relationship with the AU and its member states. He disclosed that the German Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs had been supporting the AU and member states to have effective and sustainable border management in order to prevent conflicts.
According to Kirchner, “the German Cooperation would like to extend its support to the AU border programme through another three years phase from 2020-2022 by providing additional amount of 18 million Euro.”
