—U-17 Women World Cup:
As the U-17 women World Cup gets underway this weekend in Costa Rica, a total of 16 teams have converged on the country to begin battle at the 4th edition of the tournament which kicks off tomorrow. The biennial soccer competition will take place between March 15 and April 4.
Already, Nigeria’s Flamingoes are battle ready, awaiting their opening Group D match against their China on Sunday. The encounter will be the second match of the day, taking place in the evening at Estadio Alejandro Morera Stadium in Ajajuela.
The other Group D match which will be played earlier in the day will feature Mexico and Columbia.
Ahead of the cadet championship, Flamingoes’ head coach, BalaNkiyu, had declared that his side were very much ready to face any opposition with the aim of reaching the grand finale.
Speaking shortly after his team concluded a 19-day training tour in faraway Portugal, Nkiyu, whose players didn’t kick the ball but went ahead to qualify for the tournament, remained optimistic that nothing would stop them from achieving their mandate.
According to him, “The players have continued to improve by the day. They have been adapting to playing instructions. In the previous tournament, the team couldn’t progress beyond quarterfinals not because they didn’t do well.
“So, this time, we are determined to correct any past mistakes and surpass previous records. Our target is to get to final and lift the trophy by the grace of God.
The Flamingoes, Ghana and Zambia are representing Africa.
