FG’s N6bn Ogoni clean-up approval excites ERA, FoEN

The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN), Tuesday lauded the federal government’s approval of N6 billion for the provision of clean portable water for Ogoni communities.

This was as the group advised the recently inaugurated Governing Council for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) and Board of Trustees to establish Centre of Excellence for the Ogoni cleanup process.

In a statement issued by Porgrammes Director, ERA/FoEN, Mike Karikpo, the group tasked the Federal Ministry of Environment and HYPREP to make the contractual terms and costs for the over N6 billion water projects public.

The statement also urged the new board and governing council to avoid any potential conflict of interests in the award of clean up contracts and procurement process that has been a major issue bisecting the process.

Continuing, the group called on the federal government to immediately replace Professor Phillip Shokolo – the Shell nominee at HYPREP coordination office who presently acts as interim coordinator.
