Driver arraigned for dangerous driving, killing of traffic officer

A 28-year-old driver, Amadu Omaye, yesterday appeared in Chief Magistrates’ Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, for dangerous driving and killing a traffic officer on duty.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Paul Anigbo, told the court that on May 9, at about 9.30 am, Omaye drove his car recklessly on the Umar Musa Yar’Adua way by the Lugbe Police sign post, Abuja.
He alleged that the accused had driven recklessly and knocked down Mr Ogunyemi Philip, an officer with the Directorate of Road Traffic Service, VIO, Kuje, Abuja.

Anigbo said the accused knocked down the officer while he was on duty and trying to apprehend a motorcyclist who violated traffic rules.
He told the court that the victim sustained injuries and later died at the National Hospital, Abuja.
Anigbo said the accused was driving a Nissan Almera car with registration number LKJ 494 AE.
He said the accused was standing trial for causing death by dangerous driving which contravened the Road Traffic Act.
The accused pleaded not guilty.

The judge, Mr Usman Shaibu, granted the accused bail for N1 million with a reliable surety who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
He said the surety must be a civil servant not below GL. 10 in the Federal Civil Service.
Shaibu adjourned the case until June 16, for hearing. (NAN)
