Delta: CSO protests illegal arrest, detention of 2 builders by police

The Bail is Free Campaign, Monday, stormed Delta state Police command headquarters protesting against illegal arrest, harassment and continued detention of innocent professional builders, Mr. Henry Umukoro and Godfrey Jonah.

The protesters numbering over 50 were armed with placards with various inscriptions saying the blatant abuse of power constitutes a direct violation of the Nigerian constitution and the fundamental human rights guaranteed to every citizen.

They called on the Inspector General of Police, the Police Service Commission and the National Human Rights Commission to take urgent action against the officers and facilitate unconditional release of the innocent citizens.

The coordinator of the group, Mr. David Ugolor, described it as  a gross miscarriage of justice and a chilling reminder of the systemic rot within policing institutions where corruption thrives and liberty is traded for bribes.

He said: “On the 1lth of April, 2025, Mr. Godfrey Jonah, was arrested by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Oghara Division, Delta state in connection with a mob action against an individual suspected of theft, Mr. Umukoro, moved by a sense of civic responsibility and concern, approached the station to secure bail for his colleague.

“In a shocking twist of events, he was also arrested and detained without any credible evidence linking him to the alleged crime.”
