Challenging elevation of high chiefs to Obas in court’ll end up in futility – Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state on Friday said anyone planning to go to court over the elevation of Ibadan High Chiefs to beaded crown- wearing Obas would fail “this time around.”

However, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadan land, High Chief Rasidi Ladoja, was absent at the presentation of the beaded crowns to the 10 High Chiefs.

Speaking at the event at the Mapo hall, Makinde declared that he was not the one who presented crowns to the ten newly crowned High Chiefs of the Olubadan-in-Council.

He said he was only at the event to present the instrument of office as expected of him as the governor as well as to observe the event as a guest.

The governor recalled that at a time he was against the crowning of some monarchs but that he had learnt better and seen things more clearly, especially since the request was made by the Olubadan himself.

In his remarks, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, disclosed that the stool of Olubadan would not lose its respect, honour and prestige with the elevation of Ibadan High Chiefs to beaded crown- wearing Obas.

He said with the elevation of the High Chiefs, “the uniqueness of our Ibadan traditional system remains as it is as nothing changes in our succession plan and the titles with which our High Chiefs are elevated remain, both in nomenclatures and functions.”

He said, “I have heard people hammering the uniqueness of our Ibadan traditional system and painting the picture of trying to alter it with what we are doing with this elevation. Far from it! The system remains as it is as nothing changes in our succession plan and the titles with which our High Chiefs are elevated remain, both in nomenclatures and functions.”
