CAF Confed Cup: Rivers United tackle Motema Pembe Wednesday in Uyo

Rivers United will hope to consolidate their leadership on the CAF Confederation Cup Group B when they confront Motema Pembe on Wednesday in Uyo in the second leg tie of the encounter.

On Sunday in far awayLuanda, ten-men Rivers United boosted their chances of reaching the knockout rounds of the CAF Confederation Cup when they defeated Motema Pembe 1-0 in Luanda, Angola.

Rivers United now have six points from three matches in the group stage of the competition and could further improve their chances of progress with a win over Motema Pembe Wednesday when both teams clash again in Nigeria.

Paul Acquah scored the match winner for ‘The Pride of Rivers’ in the 52nd minute.

The Ghanaian winger found the net from a rebound  after his initial header was blocked by the keeper in a match that saw Ebube Duru’s dismissal for a second yellow card with 3 minutes before half time, giving Coach Stanley Eguma a valuable win. Picking the quarter final ticket might still be very open for all teams in the group, but this result could prove a springboard for the Pride of Rivers.

Rivers United’s win inflicted a first home defeat in the CAF TotalEnergies Confederation’s Cup in this seasons campaign on the Les Immaculés.

ASEC Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire and Diables Noire from Congo are the other teams in this group.
