Appeal to Gov. Bala on flood hit areas

Through this esteemed Blueprint space, I wish to draw the attention of Governor Bala Abdulqadir Mohammed, of Bauchi state to the grave situation in the towns of Gwaram, Akuyam, Hardawa, Zadawa of Misau local government area Jama’are town (Jama’are local government area) and Itas Gadau local government area.

Flooding affects these areas more broadly than what the environmental agencies were able to report. Employment declines for one year, businesses are interrupted, families are in trauma, schools are closed and shortages of critical human services are few among the consequences caused by the flooding which are not covered in the reports.

Recently, there have been enormous rains which destroyed crops and vegetation, thus rendering the farmers hopeless with a little chance of recovering.

The communities had set up their own coping mechanisms to mitigate the effects of the hazard (flooding), but they have not been quite effective.

Many a time this problem has been brought to the notice of the previous administrations through the press and other means but nothing has been done. May we hope now that you would immediately look into this matter and take urgent steps as you did in Kirfi local government area to avoid further occurrence of the seasonal disaster.

Structural measures such as embankments, flood walls, sea walls, dams, reservoirs, natural detention basins, drainage improvement, among others, should be adopted in order to contain the hazard.

We appeal to you Sir, as the masses governor, to engage the services of competent engineers to ensure the flooding is well and structurally managed. Without doing this, these communities will continue to wallow in poverty and hunger and be deprived of every socio-economic activities which is so far the best ingredients for survival.

Thank you and see you at work!
