The Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC) has called for the inclusion of off-grid power consumers in the provision of the proposed free two-month electricity supply package as a measure to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the citizens.
Earlier this month the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) declared its alignment with the federal government to fulfilling this proposed token, however, there was no indication if this will benefit all power consumers (centralised and decentralised).
The Executive Secretary of APGC, Joy Ogaji in a statement said the planned free power package should not be for only Nigerians using on-grid electricity.
Ogaji said: “First and foremost, you need to check the press statement of the National Assembly. What they wrote there is free power for all Nigerians.
“So what to do is to calculate by our population. Our population is about 200 million people. To be on the safe side, let’s just use 190 million people.
“So if you now say for all Nigerians you need to calculate those that are using a generator, those that are off-grid, like a private solar arrangement, before you will be able to get the aggregate. Because you cannot calculate only those on the grid, because on the grid, with the Discos’ record, it’s just about nine million.”
The proposed free power supply will cost the federal government an average of N109.83 billion ($281 million).
