FRSC seeks establishment of cycling club in Gombe

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Gombe state command has called for the establishment of a cycling club in Gombe to encourage cycling in the state as well as improve the health of citizens.

Dr Godwin Omiko, the state’s sector commander, made this call in Gombe Monday, during activities to mark the 2nd United Nations World Cycling Day with the theme: “Cycling for a Healthy Life Style.”

Omiko said the people needed to be encouraged on the need to use cycling as a means of improving health and preventing sicknesses, adding that those that engage in cycling regularly hardly fall sick.

“We call for a cycling club or society in Gombe as this will help to promote the culture of cycling and improve the health lifestyle of Gombe citizens.

“Cycling is a good way of fighting diseases especially for people with type 1 and 2 diabetes and those who want to keep fit.

Omiko also called on government to set up cycle routes within Gombe state to safeguard cyclists and those who intend to engage in cycling activities.

“We call on government and relevant ministries to look into the absence of cycling tracks as the provision of such will help to promote the culture of cycling in Nigeria.

“Government should be able to provide means of safeguarding cyclists on our roads. In some developed countries, we have cycle tracks that are for cycling. There is nothing that stops such in our environment.

“When such happens, cyclists will have assurances of their safety and that will give them the courage to use bicycles as means of transportation,” he said.
