Federal Fire Service (FFS) has revealed that about 600 lives have been lost to the fire disasters in various markets across the country in the recent time, while about N3 trillion were lost at the Sabon Gari market alone in Kano state.
The agency, therefore, assured Nigerians of reduction in the spate of uncontrolled fire outbreaks “in our communities as the programme unfolds and by extension, curtailment of incessant fire emergencies in our market in order to ensure sustainability of the people’s soco-economic development.”
The agency in a statement signed yesterday in Abuja by its spokesman, Elechi Collins, to announce the 8th conference of state Directors of Fire Service, Controller-General and its National Council, said this year’s conference team titled: “’Menace of market fires in capital Nigeria” was carefully chosen because of the recent fire threat in the country.
The statement said papers to be discussed in the fie-day event included “effects of market fire on social economic development of Nigeria, fire safety in our market: the role of stakeholders and market fires and the role of Nigerian traders.”
