Ousted chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff, yesterday explained that he cannot operate from the national headquarters of the party, for now, due to appeal by immediate past Inspector General of Police (IGP) to await the outcome of an ongoing investigations on alleged attack on two of his National Working Committee members by Fulani herdsmen at the party secretariat.
According to Sheriff, the national secretary, Prof Adewale Oladipo and the national auditor, Alhaji Wole Adeyanju, narrowly escaped death at the party’s national secretariat, last week, when some herdsmen brought by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, besieged the secretariat.
Sheriff, who made this disclosure yesterday at the inauguration of the party’s factional screening committee on the Edo gubernatorial primaries, told newsmen that three people have obtained the N10million nomination form to participate in the primaries, adding that they would beat the July 10 INEC deadline for submission of name of the party flag bearer.
“As soon as the police concluded their investigations, the place will open and I will operate from there. What we are trying to do is to always be by the side of the law and today we are inaugurating our committees for the Edo state election”, he said.
Sheriff, who is still claiming to the national chairman of the party, alleged that the herdsmen were brought to the party secretariat by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, added that he would, by next week, resume work at the party office when the police would have released the outcome of their investigations.
