Managing Director of Agri-SeedCo Nigeria Ltd (SEEDCO), Kolade Dada, Wednesday disclosed that the company is partnering with pan-African agro-businesses in promoting certified seeds to enhance farmer livelihoods, and support the federal government’s food security initiatives.
Dada who spoke in an interview with newsmen in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, said the company has been making efforts to promote certified seeds, particularly maize, to enhance food security in Nigeria.
Dada revealed that demand for certified seeds has increased by over 40% between 2021 and 2022, driven primarily by private sector players.
He attributed the growth to the industry’s self-regulation and the government’s reduced involvement in seed subsidies.
Dada identified infrastructure, insecurity, and farmers’ stereotypes as major challenges in penetrating rural markets, adding that to over come the challenges SEEDCO has leverages technology, including social media and digital agronomy, to reach farmers.
He explained that Hybrid seeds outperform traditional varieties in yields and disease resistance. Popular Hybrid maize varieties in Nigeria include 719, 659, and 419.
“We are ensuring quality standards through rigorous processes, including genetic testing and paternity tests. The company adheres to National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) regulations and maintains stricter internal standards.
“To make Hybrid seeds affordable for smallholder farmers, SEEDCO localizes production, offers promotions, and provides storage services.
“By promoting certified seeds and addressing rural penetration challenges, we intend to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s food security and agricultural development.
