As a traditional title holder of Wakilin Birnin Bauchi, Yakubu Shehu Abdullahi, member representing Bauchi federal constituency at the House of Representatives, has the right to participate in equestrianism because that is how it should be.
Daushe, one of the servants of His Royal Highness Emir Muhammadu Rumfa of Kano was absent whilst Eid homage was paid to the emir on Eid day. On his return two days after the Eid, he organised few horses and paid homage to Emir Rumfa.
From that day, 621 years today, Hawan Daushe (traditional equestrianism) was introduced in honour of Daushe. Traditional title holders including the emir usually go round the town on their horses two days after Eid-el-Fitr to celebrate the successful completion of Ramadan. So I don’t blame Wakilin Birni for exercising his right, but the big question is, does he participate in legislative activities the way he does when it comes to equestrianism?
At about 1. 42pm on Saturday, May 15, I was standing in Wunti street, Bauchi watching the Hawan Daushe and I suddenly sighted Wakilin Birni dressed to nines in the midst of his contingent— few people were waving at him because thousands were angry with him as a result of his poor representation at the green chamber!
To my dismay, a group of fencers (‘Yan Gunda) suspected to be Wakilin Birni’s companions during the event violently dispersed the spectators—where some fell into a gutter and others left with dislocated feet!
How many bills has Wakilin Birni sponsored? How many motions has he moved? How many constituency projects has he brought? How many youth has he empowered? Or does Wakilin Birni see equestrianism (Hawan Daushe) as one of his legislative chores?
