Super Falcons rising star, Chioma Okafor, has opened up about her choice to represent Nigeria at international level despite being eligible to play for Malawi.
Born to a Nigerian father and a Malawian mother, Okafor said the decision wasn’t easy but was influenced by her desire to compete at the highest level of women’s football.
“It wasn’t an easy decision,” Okafor told Ademola Victor TV. “I needed to play with players that are better than myself. With time, Malawi will get there but time is always ticking. I can’t just keep on waiting; I had to take the opportunity.”
Okafor is set to be cap-tied to Nigeria if she features in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against Morocco on Saturday — even if it’s just for a single second.
Expressing gratitude to her Super Falcons teammates, the forward praised the unity and support she has received since joining the Nigerian squad.
“Since the first day I stepped into camp, they have been so welcoming. All the girls, so much like I have 23 other sisters here, are always taking and looking out for me. I thank them so much for welcoming me.”
Her inclusion in the national team marks a significant milestone in her career, as she eyes her debut in a major continental final wearing Nigeria’s colours.
