Following their historic comeback victory over the Atlas Lionesses, Nigeria’s Super Falcons and their coach, Justin Madugu, dominated the individual honours at the just-concluded 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Esther Okoronkwo was named Woman of the Match in the final after a standout performance that saw her register one goal and two assists in Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 win over host nation Morocco at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade was crowned Woman of the Tournament, having claimed three Player of the Match awards en route to the final. Her leadership and consistent brilliance were instrumental in the Super Falcons’ record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who recently signed with English side Brighton, earned the Best Goalkeeper award after keeping four clean sheets throughout the competition.
Coach Justin Madugu was deservedly named Coach of the Tournament for masterminding Nigeria’s impressive campaign and guiding them to yet another continental triumph.
Elsewhere, Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak clinched the Top Scorer award with five goals, while South Africa’s Banyana Banyana received the Fair Play award for their exemplary conduct on and off the pitch.
The Super Falcons’ victory was sealed in dramatic fashion, as they came from two goals down to defeat the Atlas Lionesses 3-2 in a pulsating final, further cementing their status as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.
