WAEC increases pass rate in 2025 SSCE after result review

WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a major revision in the number of candidates who achieved credit passes in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, in the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Following a review of the exam results initially released earlier this week, WAEC reported that 1,239,884 candidates—62.9% of the 1,969,313 who took the exam—have now secured the necessary credits.

This is a significant improvement from the original figure of 754,545 candidates, representing only 38.32%.

WAEC explained that the increase resulted from correcting errors found in the marking of serialized objective questions, which had impacted the earlier result calculations.

The initial low pass rate, especially in English and Mathematics, triggered strong reactions from parents and education stakeholders. Many blamed WAEC for procedural lapses, notably the scheduling of the English Language exam, which some candidates reportedly wrote late into the night under harsh conditions.
