The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged the public to disregard a viral video currently circulating on social media, showing a tricycle rider, unclad and aggressive, confronting FRSC personnel and damaging a patrol vehicle along the Benin Sapele Road.
The Corps in a statement on Wednesday in Benin, Edo state, clarified that the video is not recent but dates back to July 16, 2020, and that all necessary legal and disciplinary actions had been taken and concluded since 2021.
According to the FRSC, the renewed circulation of the video is a deliberate attempt by certain individuals to mislead the public, attract online attention, and provoke unnecessary outrage over a matter that has been fully resolved.
The tricycle rider, identified as Mr. Adeshine Adeyemo, was prosecuted shortly after the incident and convicted on January 11, 2021, by Magistrate F. Ojehumen at the Evbuoriaria Magistrate Court, Benin City. He was sentenced to three months in prison for malicious damage and breach of public peace.
In addition, the FRSC launched an internal investigation into the conduct of its operatives featured in the video. Following a disciplinary review, all seven members of the patrol team were found to have acted unprofessionally. They were sanctioned with demotion in rank and redeployed from their former command as part of the Corps’ zero-tolerance policy on misconduct.
FRSC emphasized its continued stance that while attacks on its officers and destruction of property are unacceptable, the Corps equally holds its personnel accountable for any unprofessional conduct. “This position remains unchanged,” the statement read.
The Corps warned that the resurfacing of the video could incite public misunderstanding, as many may falsely assume it reflects a recent occurrence. It therefore called on citizens to disregard the video and avoid being misled by social media content lacking context or accuracy.
Reaffirming its commitment to road safety and professionalism, the FRSC encouraged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers and assured continued efforts to maintain ethical standards, discipline, and respect for human dignity in its operations.
