The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and its partners have donated a 720,000-litre-per-day capacity Oxygen Plant to the Yobe state government to help reduce neonatal mortality rates in the state.
The UNICEF Nigeria country representative, Cristian Munduate, who handed over the oxygen gas plant situated at the state specialist hospital Damaturu, said it will help in providing oxygen to health facilities so that babies who have complications at birth can be saved.
She stated that this is a critical part of babies health as well as adolescent and women respectively.
“The capacity of the plant is to produce 720,000 litres of oxygen per day and it is a sophisticated machine that really need maintenance.
“So we are so happy to hear about the Yobe state government’s commitment and specially the Commissioner of health that they will take care of the gas plant.
“On our side, UNICEF will continue to support the health sector in Yobe working with the health commissioner,” he said
The Yobe state commissioner of health and human services, Dr. Mohammed Lawan Gana, who received the oxygen gas plant on behalf of the Yobe state Governor, Mai Mala Buni, said presence of an oxygen plant in the health facility will go a along way in reducing out of stock of oxygen which is very important component of health care service delivery.
Dr. Gana revealed that now that the state has an oxygen gas plant, it will be maintain it and ensure it is used to save lives.
