Authorities of the University of Ibadan on Friday asked students of the institution to vacate the campus “with immediate effect.”
It gave the directive in a special release titled, “Closure of the University to Students,” adding that the decision was taken as precautionary measure to curtail the spread of the deadly coronavirus in the university.
The special release signed by the registrar, Mrs. Olubunmi Faluyi, read in part, “All students, undergraduates and post-graduates to vacate the campus with effect from today, Friday, March 20, 2020.
“This is to inform the university community that the board of health of the University of Ibadan at its meeting of Thursday, March 19, 2020, considered the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. As a health safety precautionary measure, it recommended that all students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) vacate the Campus immediately.”
It further read, “Consequently, all students are hereby directed to vacate the campus with effect from Friday, March 20, 2020. The institution will remain closed to students until further notice. However, the Students’ Affairs Division of the university will see to any need to make special arrangements for international students who are unable to vacate their hostels.
“The vice-chancellor has approved this recommendation on behalf of the Senate and the university will remain closed till further notice.”
Also, the University of Ibadan ordered the “immediate closure of all primary and secondary schools in the university community until the coronavirus pandemic is brought under effective control.”
“Consequently, all students are hereby directed to vacate the campus with effect from Friday, March 20, 2020.
“All primary and secondary schools in the University of Ibadan are hereby advised to close until the Pandemic is brought under effective control. All staff and students, wherever they may be, are strongly advised to adhere strictly to all health safety measures to avoid exposure to or contact with the virus.”
