UI non-academic unions embark on strike

Non-academic Unions of the university of Ibadan yesterday directed its members to commence indefi nite strike over alleged illegal deductions of pensions and shortfall in the payment of their salaries Th e three non-academic unions handed down the strike order at a joint congress of where the position of the University of Ibadan management on the deductions of pensions and shortfall in the payment of their salaries were turned down by members of the unions.

At the joint congress presided over by the leadership of nonacademic staff union (Wale Akinremi (SSANU), Caleb Falaye (NAAT), and O.A Arojo (NASU), which kicked off at about 8am, the union members kicked against the plea by the University Management to grant the university “some time to address all the issues while others will the channeled to the Governing Council scheduled to meet this Wednesday.” Th e unions at the Congress gave their demands as the nonpayment of promotion arrears, illegal pension deductions, constitution of independent and credible staff audit exercise and investigation into the internally generated revenue and its mode of expenditure.

It would be recalled that members of the Joint Action Congress of Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technicians (NAAT) at the University of Ibadan had given the Institution’s management till March 10, 2017, to address the issues or face indefi nite strike action.

Th e Institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, had written to the unions stating his resolve to improve on staff welfare, adding that his administration had nothing to hide.
