UEFA Champions League matchday 5 preview: Catalans, Reds, look to command top spots

Barcelona will battle Borussia Dortmund at the Nou Camp knowing that a win will secure top spot with a game to spare. It’s not that simple though as defeat could see them needing to avoid defeat on the final Matchday against Inter Milan at the San Siro. The Catalans were held to a surprise goalless draw by Slavia Prague in their last game, which has further increased the pressure on Ernesto Valverde, and it’s going to get even worse should they fail to beat the Germans. Dortmund are not performing any better as seen by their 3-3 draw against Paderborn last time. They have dropped to sixth in the Bundesliga thanks a disappointing run of form which has put Lucien Favre on the spot.

They have nonetheless done well in the Champions League this season and should be able to qualify even if they lose to Barca.

Inter Milan will need to beat Slavia Prague at the Sinobo Stadium to keep their qualification hopes alive. The Nerazurri are three points off second placed Dortmund and will make the trip to the Nou Camp on the final day, so the points here will be crucial. They have won just one of their four Champions League games this season despite winning 11 out of 13 Serie A games so far. Prague will be no pushovers as well. They held Inter to a draw in the early rounds and held Barcelona to a goalless draw at the Nou Camp, so expect a tough day at the office for Inter.

Liverpool will book their place in the round of 16 with a game to spare if they beat Napoli at Anfield. The Reds have won three and lost one of their four games to top Group E, one point clear of the Italian side who have won two and drawn two of their fixtures. Liverpool have won 22 of their last 24 games in all competitions and will look to avenge their defeat in Naples on Matchday one. It will be tough for Napoli who hVe picked up five draws and one defeat in their last six matches, and against a Reds side with a formidable record at home, Carlo Ancelotti’s men will have a huge mountain to climb.

Red Bull Salzburg will look to nail down a Europa League spot when they face Genk at the Cristal Arena.

With both sides locked on seven points, Valencia will have the opportunity to seize second spot in Group H when they host Chelsea at the Mestalla, while Ajax, also on seven points, travel to take on Lille at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.

Zenit St. Petersburg will need to beat Lyon to keep their hopes of qualifying from Group G alive, while group leaders RB Leipzig take on Benfica at the Red Bull Arena.
