The Yobe girl who raised Nigeria’s flag in London deserves more than applause

At a time when many still question whether young Nigerians, especially those from the North-east, can speak fluent English or compete globally, a brilliant young girl from Yobe state has proven skeptics wrong.

In a global English Language championship with participants from 69 countries, including native English speakers, she emerged the overall winner. Her success is not just personal. It is a national moment of pride and a powerful statement about the resilience and potential of Nigerian youth.

This young lady comes from a region affected by years of conflict, underdevelopment, and limited access to quality education. Yet, she rose above it all and proudly raised the Nigerian flag in London, showing the world what young Nigerians can achieve when given the opportunity.

Her victory is a reminder that excellence exists in every corner of our country. But it also brings attention to those who supported her journey. Her English Language teacher deserves equal recognition. Behind every brilliant student is a teacher who worked tirelessly, often without recognition, to make success possible.

This is why I am calling on President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to do more than simply acknowledge this win. This girl deserves more than $100,000. She deserves to be honoured by the nation, not just as a winner of a competition, but also as a symbol of what is possible in Nigeria today.

Her story should be amplified across schools and platforms, especially in a time when hope is in short supply. Let her serve as a reminder that even in a country overwhelmed by challenges, excellence can still rise.

She made Nigeria proud in London. Now let us make her proud at home.
