The statement above abounds in several instances in law. The term from my layman’s perspective is paramount in dispensing justice that even criminals, who are found guilty by the court, deserve mercy. This implies that criminals, despite their behaviours, have claim to mercy.
But the sacking of local government staff by the Nasir El-Rufai government, on the flimsy reasons of redundancy, may be seen to be right but is merciless, heartless and unethical of a government borne by the change mantra.
They, unlike criminals, deserve some elements of sympathy, mercy and compassion from the government but it is not shown anywhere. Just pack and go? As if we are not a civilised society with guidelines governing our conduct to public affairs. Please, the government should show some decorum and accord these sacked staff some gestures of civility.
