After months of division and internal strife, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Rivers state chapter, turned a new page on Friday, 6 June 2025, as warring factions finally agreed to bury the hatchet and work together in unity.

The reconciliation meeting presided over by Comrade Paul Bazia-Nsaneh, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers state council, brought relief and jubilation to members who had long hoped for healing and harmony in the association.

The agreement, which followed months of tension and division, marked a turning point for SWAN Rivers, as both parties pledged to prioritise the progress of sports reportage in the state above personal interests.

Comrade Bazia, in his remarks, praised both factions for their willingness to reconcile and place professionalism above personal pride.

“After lengthy deliberations, both factions of SWAN have agreed to sheathe their swords and endorsed a unified leadership structure to pilot the chapter’s affairs pending a formal congress and elections.

“This is not just a truce, it’s a turning point. The unity of SWAN Rivers is essential for the credibility of sports journalism in our state. I commend the stakeholders who made this unity possible,” he said.

Representatives from both sides expressed their commitment to the new accord.

They agreed to dissolve all parallel structures, work towards a unified leadership of Sir Cyril Dum-Wite, and focus on restoring the association’s image and strength in Rivers state.

A joint communiqué was signed, outlining steps for collaboration, capacity building, and a roadmap for credible elections.

Speaking after the reconciliatory meeting, Amb. Mrs. Didi Phina Ojogwu, aka SportsMama, expressed her heartfelt excitement over the long-awaited peace.

“This is a beautiful day for us all. Finally, peace has been brokered, and I believe this unity will open a new chapter of progress, professionalism, and purpose for SWAN Rivers. I’m proud of everyone who made this happen,” she said.

Also, Mr. James Remi Onoja, a respected elder statesman of SWAN in Rivers state, urged all members to stand by the resolutions reached and remain committed to the rebuilding process.

“We must all rise above past differences and focus on what truly matters, which, no doubt, is the growth and credibility of our association. If we work together with sincerity and discipline, SWAN Rivers can become one of the most respected chapters in the country,” he said.

The Rivers state chapter of NUJ Secretary, Dr. Ijeoma Acholonu, and other top invited Elders of SWAN who attended the meeting applauded the resolution, describing it as a much-needed healing balm for the sports media industry in the State.

Also, the NUJ Rivers state council has pledged continued oversight to ensure the peace deal holds and that future disagreements are handled internally through constitutional means.
