Lagos State University (LASU) has suspended all academic and socio-academic activities, including the 2024/2025 second semester examinations, due to an ongoing strike by staff unions.

The decision was taken during a virtual meeting of the university’s Senate held on Saturday, August 2, 2025. According to a statement signed by Deputy Registrar, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the strike was declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of LASU staff unions, which includes ASUU, NASU, SSANU, and NAAT.

The Senate clarified that the industrial action is targeted at the Lagos State Government, not the university management.

“The core demands of the Joint Action Committee are directed at the Lagos State Government,” said the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate.

It was also disclosed that the university management had made several efforts to mediate between the unions and the government. A meeting chaired by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, was held on August 1, with key stakeholders present. It was agreed that further consultations would continue on Thursday, August 7.

Pending the outcome of those discussions, the university announced a suspension of all activities. “The 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, scheduled to begin on Monday, August 4, 2025, are hereby suspended until further notice,” the Senate declared.

Students have also been instructed to vacate all university hostels across the Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry campuses by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4.

The Senate urged students and staff to remain calm and law-abiding while the situation unfolds.

“We are LASU, We are Great!” the statement concluded.
