The meeting, at the instance of the Secretary to Government to the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, to find a lasting peace to the strike embarked by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), yesterday ended in deadlock as both parties failed to agree on the issue that led to the strike.
The meeting will continue today with the body of Attorney General of States, Chief Registrars of States, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and other stakeholders to resolve the matter.
Secretary to the Government of Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, who had earlier appealed to the striking workers to call-off the strike, said the federal government was committed to financial autonomy of the judiciary.
“Let me state here that federal government is committed to the financial autonomy of judiciary, and will ensure the sector is strengthen where is necessarily. However I am me appealing to JUSUN to call off the strike in the interest of Nigerians. JUSUN must consider their stance and work towards ensuring this issue is resolved as we are in a crucial time in our life as a country”, he said.
He said JUSUN must consider suspending the action in the interest of Nigerians who may be suffering in jail while awaiting trial due to the strike by the union.
NBA president, Augustine Aleghe, who moderated the meeting said it was clear that both federal and states were not complying with the provision of the constitution as regard to financial autonomy of the Judiciary.
He, however, appealed to JUSUN to end the action to allow a robust negotiation that will bring industrial peace to the sector.
JUSUN president, comrade Marwan Mustapha Adamu who spoke with Blueprint at the end of the meeting that lasted for 4 hours said the union position was that the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, must be obey in it totality.
